Following the release of his latest record, Stoned, the UNN artiste Skelzi discusses his life and music inspiration in this career-spanning interview with campusxp magazine.
Can you introduce yourself to campusxp readers
I’m Uche Ifeanyi Anthony also known as Skelzi.
What was growing up like?
Sincerely, it was difficult, I am the first so I always struggled because my younger ones always looked up to me and my parents were not so comfortable at the beginning, so these contributed to a lot of things.
Who and what influenced you while starting your music career?
I got influenced by watching artistes perform and seeing them make people happy, I love music and I want to use it to make people happy. But Mr Eazi was one artiste who influenced me very much, I love his style of music, it mirrored my lifestyle.
What is it about you that your fans don’t know, do you have any hidden talents?
I do play football ⚽ and I’m also good at modelling.
Which of your songs was most challenging for you?
Sincerely all my songs are not really challenging, I jus do it and it works for me buh if I’ll say, it’ll be WANTED because I felt challenged while I was doing d song, some people underrated my song writing skills a lot, so ah had to take a lot of time to craft the song and now it’s a hit 🔥 🔥.
How do you get inspiration for your songs
Like burna boy , “I’m an afro fusionist”. I just listen to the beats and if the beat reflects the mood I’m in, I freestyle to it, then write the lyrics.
Who have you always dreamt of working with and why?
OBO, baddest, I love his energy on every track, it’s contagious, it doesn’t mean I don’t want to work with others but Davido is my favourite.
What has changed about you since you started your music career?
Nothing really, just that I’m loved by more people. More people know me and respect me
Is it challenging to be a music artiste in UNN?
The challenge can’t be overestimated, it’s very challenging because it’s not really through talent that you get shows here, it’s actually if you know people and apart from that getting people to listen to your music here, it’s kinda very difficult, it requires a lot of hard work to do it.
How do you manage to combine music with your academiacs?
I choose when to face my music, I don’t really go to the studio all the time, only when I feel I’m in the mood for the song and I like it so much, then I work on it and perfect it but I don’t spend so much time on music, I select the time to do it and I also have time to face my books.
Which female Nigerian Artiste would you go out on date with?
I love seyi shay, she’s got this bad girl thing about her.
What piece of advice would you give your fellow artistes
believe in yourself, believe in God and keep hustling.
